It was in response to this law that got passed 23 years ago — the Defense Culpability Act. Said that anyone who defended a guilty criminal would be deemed just as guilty and get the same sentence. Everything just kinda snowballed from there, 'cause once you had everyone accused of a crime pretty much guaranteed to get a guilty verdict regardless of the truth, the regime had a real easy way of getting rid of the opposition.
